My name is Jessica Alvarado Granados, and I am the proud daughter and wife of Mexican immigrants. Both my parents were born and raised in Mexico and, eventually as others did, crossed the border in search of a better future. My parents worked as migrant workers traveling from South Texas all the way up to Maryland working in the "labores," fields.


At the time of my arrival, my parents were working in Georgia. My "Mami," was only 12 years old when she married my "Papi. My Papi, sort of took the "father" role in my Mami's life and in her two younger sister's lives. I still feel the wetness on my cheeks as my Mami tells of the countless nights they went to hispanic heritage essay hungry and not knowing when or what their next meal would be.


When she married my Papi, the hungry nights ended but a whole new life of pain, suffering, struggles and happiness began. My parents had eight children and raised two grandchildren. I am number seven of the eight. Growing up, I saw, heard and felt everything my Mami did. When she cried, I cried. When she suffered, I suffered; when she was happy, I was happy. And to this day, we still feel everything the other does.
